Last weekend, Jake and I panic flew to LA and deci Last weekend, Jake and I panic flew to LA and decided to run the Big Bear Spartan race.
•
Had a great time in Cali for the short weekend. Got to see an old college friend, experience the LA life, tour a couple of things, and just enjoying the quick transitions from the city, to the beach, and of course the mountains.
•
This race was the 3rd race of the US Age Group Series, but my second race of the series. I don’t really feel like showing pictures from the race because honestly they all look the same. Spartan isn’t great with diversity with their pics.
•
This race was a tough one. It was blazing out. On the east coast, when it started to warm up, we were running in the woods. Had a bit more shade. The terrain was basically dirt, dust, and rock. Once again on the east coast, there is a lot more grass, tree roots, and mud.
•
Happy with my efforts but I could tell my body was not ready for this race yet. Since my body didn’t feel ready, I started to play some mind games with myself. Once I feel like I can’t red line anymore, it’s hard for me to pick it back up during parts of the race that I know where my strengths are.
•
I placed 6th in this race. Would of been 4th if I would have red lined at the end like I was planning to do. For the whole series, ranked 5th for the time being. 2 more races to do and so much training to do!

Double the Monkey Bars, Bucket Carry, Barbed Wire Double the Monkey Bars, Bucket Carry, Barbed Wire Crawl, Mountain Trails, & Podium Spot!
•
Last weekend, I participated in the Tri-State New Jersey Spartan Beast and Super. About 7,500ft of elevation gain, and around 21 miles spread out into two days.
•
Mountain trails will always have a special place in my heart. So far this year, all my races were either in Florida or Georgia. Those venues were great, but something about power hiking some steep trails with technical terrain and then letting gravity over take my body down the mountain is were my soul thrives.
•
Both race days I felt good. Which this was surprising to me because my nutrition has been off due to traveling, didn’t get much sleep the last couple of days, and didn’t get to taper off like I planned.
•
Obstacles seemed to come easier this race weekend compared to the last couple venues. The beginning of the race year, I could not for the life of me be able to control my heart rate to a manageable pace. 5 races in, I feel like everything is starting to click.
•
Running hurts less, obstacles don’t completely wipe me out, and race strategy is improving. This is from getting experience from running the races, but I’m also doing a lot of research leading up to the venue.
•
My research helps me mentally prepare what I just signed myself up for. Analyze race maps, looking up techniques on obstacles, YouTube reviews, etc. I choose to do the extra work early so I have less to focus on race day.
•
How do you prepare?
